What is Horticultural Therapy?

Horticultural Therapy (HT) is a formal practice that uses plants, horticultural activities, and the garden landscape to promote well-being for its participants. HT is goal oriented with defined outcomes and assessment procedures. HT sessions are administered by professionally trained horticultural therapists.
During your time at Hollyhock, you can anticipate:

  1. Understanding the Distinctions: Explore the unique qualities of Horticultural Therapy and distinguish it from related disciplines like Forest Therapy or Ecotherapy.

  2. Daily Therapeutic Nature-based Practices: Engage in memorable, profound and sometimes silly activities in and around the garden that are immediately effective at reducing stress and its impacts.

  3. Reconnecting with Nature: Discover proven methods of reconnecting with nature, which enhance personal resilience and deliver measurable benefits across five key wellness domains: physical, psychological, cognitive, social, and spiritual.

  4. Cultivating Meaningful People-Plant Relationships: Embark on a four-step process to cultivate meaningful connections with plants, observe personal responses, and maximize therapeutic outcomes.

  5. Embracing the Joy of Play and Appreciation: Take the time to play, breathe deeply, and relish in the scents and sights of the garden and many other delightful natural wonders from roses to rutabagas.

  6. Customized Nature-based Wellness Plan: Develop a personalized wellness plan for integrating the practices you learn into your personal or professional life. No actual garden is required at home or work to benefit from these transformative techniques.
